Embryonix -Freezing, Implanting
and Storage of Equine Embryos
Embryo Implantation.
This is performed by a non-surgical technique.  Frozen embryos are defrosted initially in air and then placed in a 37ºC water bath. The embryos are then slowly washed over a one hour period in decreasing concentrations of glycerol until all glycerol is removed and the embryo is clean and ready for implanting. A surrogate mare is chosen after she has been ultrasounded and her ovulation followed so she is at the right time to accept the embryo.   Using a single use sterile insemination gun the embryo is sterilely placed into the surrogate’s uterus. All surrogates are sedated, given Regumate and an anti-inflammatory to minimize embryo rejection.


Surrogates.
Embryonix uses mainly Standardbred mares under the age of 10, we find they are ideal surrogates as they are generally quiet and great mothers. All mares are carefully selected and well looked after. They are fully vaccinated and wormed and have a dental performed annually. They are fed a combination of pasture and hard feed. Each mare is caught individually when examined. We are also happy if clients supply their own surrogates.

 
Fee Structure.
When using a surrogate supplied by Embryonix a one off fee   is charged for a successful implantation of a frozen embryo.  This means that if the surrogate rejects the embryo there is no cost to you.  This fee includes implantation of the embryo, agistment of the surrogate until 45 days of gestation and lease of the surrogate until the foal is weaned. Surrogates are to be returned to Embryonix at the owner’s expense once the foal is weaned.             If an owner supplies a surrogate, agistment is charged from arrival.   The mare is examined and ovulation monitored, and when appropriate, the embryo is implanted.  The mare then would require 3 pregnancy tests which can either be performed at the clinic or on farm. There is no guarantee of embryo acceptance if a surrogate is supplied. These procedures are charged individually.

Storage.
Embryonix includes the price of embryo storage for the first 12 months. Thereafter a storage fee is charged.    

Foal Guarantee
Embryonix now offers a foal guarantee on embryo freezing which means for a fee we guarantee a positive 45 day pregnancy test, please phone to discuss this.

Conditions

  • The set fee for retrievals and freezing includes up to 3 attempts- further attempts are at Embryonix discretion
  • Includes most standard reproductive drugs such as Ovuplant, oxytocin etc.
  • Does not include Regumate, sedation or systemic antibiotics which are only infrequently used. Semen transportation is at the owner’s expense.
  • Frozen embryos are to be stored and implanted by Embryonix. Embryos that are shifted incur a   handling fee and no further responsibility of embryo quality or success can be taken.
  • The embryo freezing fee   is charged irrespective of the success of the implantation.
